Countdown to the Baja Ha Ha 2014

1 year out...

The 20th annual Baja Ha-Ha Cruisers Rally departed yesterday, bound for Cabo San Lucas. Why is this my first blog story? For us, it means this week marks our "1 year" deadline... so I thought it should appropriately be the beginning date for our new blog. Every proper cruiser has a blog nowadays, or so it seems, and despite my reluctant foray into this portion of the digital world, I am looking forward to recording our adventures, trials and triumphs. Even if only my mom reads them.

Last week also marked the beginning of a series of military transition assistance courses that Brian has to attend before he exits on May 2nd. He has only 6 months of active duty left and I have 7. It is quite a sobering thought, to know we are on the verge of turning our whole life upside down. And on purpose. But we literally cannot wait.

A friend just wrote me today and said all her kids would be in school full time next year and was contemplating what she wanted to be when she grew up. What would the next phase of her life look like? The great thing about this country is, we get to choose. And we have chosen to really shake things up.

Reality is now hitting with full force. OK, lightly smacking us across the face, for the time being. In a couple months I expect to be whacked by it on a daily basis. We are beginning to compile lists - for everything. Lists of things to keep, sell or trash.  And who gets to be the lucky one to store those "keepers".  Lists of things we still must purchase, projects to complete, timelines, financial decisions to make - it goes on endlessly. We are not panicking yet.. the time will come for that I'm sure. For now it is exciting to know that the goal we set 10+ years ago is quickly approaching.

As I was writing, Brian asked me why I was typing so furiously and I shouted out "I'm blogging!" I'm pretty sure he never thought he'd hear that phrase. Having been pushed/coerced/brutally forced into Facebook by my co-worker (for work purposes) I finally got a Facebook page a couple years ago. I'd then snoop in now and again to see what people were up to. Reality is now that I don't hear news about anyone unless I scan Facebook. Gone are the emails that tell me my cousin is pregnant or so and so is getting married. Yeah, you know who you are :) So the blogging bit is taking things one step further. But it will give us the ability to record our journey, keep our family updated and hopefully, pass on some good info to other new cruising preppers like us. Just don't expect me to ever Tweet...
